There are many new things we (Dean, Eloise and Kathryn) are looking forward to seeing from the secret guest at the opening meeting to the 2012 limited designs by everyone. Because so many of us will be away, we will be opening at noon on January 18th and 19th and at 10:30 on the 20th. Finding Your Real Voice Seminar October 29, 2011 - November 9, 2011 We will be offering a 2 hour seminar called Finding Your Real Voice on Saturday November 12th (from 2 to 4pm). The fee for this seminar will be $10 with all proceeds going to the Abbotsford Food Bank. The seminar will be led by our very own Ken Jasper and will include; The Essence of a 'GOOD' Voice; Your Voice and How It Works; Vocal Styles; The Four 'P's: Essential Building Blocks For Vocal Training; Warming Up Your Voice; Vocal Technique; and Microphone Techniques (time allowing). October Update October 3, 2011 - October 31, 2011 We sure are busy down here, it seems as if school gets started you turn around and the kids are already practicing their Christmas repertoire. We have our Christmas music books ready to go so that you can get your 8 weeks of practice in before the Christmas Caroling starts. As they say practice makes perfect (unless you practice with mistakes). As world renowned pianist Vladimir Horowitz says "If I do not practice for a day, I know it. If I do not practice for two days, my wife knows it. If I do not practice for three days, my audience knows it." So it is best to get an early start before life gets too busy with the hustle bustle rush of the holidays. Roger!! September 29, 2011 - October 2, 2011 Roger started playing guitar when he was 13 because the guys who lived around the corner from him were in a band, totally smitten with the sound Roger couldn't wait to save up and get a guitar of his own. At the same time the Beatles came onto the music scene and that further increased his effort to learn how to play. Roger took some lessons at the age of fifteen and played with some buddies that knew more than he did. Roger carried on playing by getting books and learning by ear to play the music of Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and a host of other great musicians. At a time in his twenties he wanted to learn how to finger pick so he took classical guitar for three years to improve his playing. As Roger “grew up” work and family took precedent over his playing for many years but he kept up the best he could. Through hard work and dedication Roger began to master the instrument, he came to know the people at Sound of Music and began to frequent the shop, purchasing various pieces of equipment for his home studio and decided one day to get out of his comfort zone and take piano lessons which has really improved his music theory and guitar playing. Roger was a Heavy Duty Mechanic for 25 years, and instructor at BCIT trades school; for 14 years and now retired and is at the Sound of Music teaching banjo and guitar.

There is much scientific debate as to music’s ability to improve the cognitive process of children. A recent Canadian study has added strength to the theory of “The Mozart Effect.” Using children aged 4 to 6 they compared the brain activity of children who were enrolled in a years worth of music lessons and those who were not. The scientists found that ‘participation in music lessons at an early stage in life can help to improve a child’s memory and learning ability by encouraging different patterns of brain development.’ The musical children performed better on a memory test also designed to assess general intelligence skills such as literacy and math ability.
In older children and young adults the difference music training makes in life can be shown easily. Children who had music lessons scored, on average, 51 points higher on the verbal portion and 39 points higher on the math portion of the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT’s). This is because music exercises the entire brain, which causes cognitive signals to fly faster and be read more accurately. This means that musicians are able to think more quickly and accurately.
As you age your body stops producing Human Growth Hormone which is implicated in such aging phenomena as osteoporosis, energy levels, wrinkling, muscle mass and general aches and pains. A recent American study has shown that playing a musical instrument as an adult and even as a senior can help your body produce some of these hormones. This study also showed that playing an instrument caused significant decreases in anxiety, depression and loneliness. So, it’s never too late to learn! Kid’s Guitar Daycamp – for kids Under 12 years of age with no guitar experience. A 2 hour camp with fun and games as a fine introduction to the basic concepts of guitar playing and music. Also featured will be an introduction to other instruments (drums, percussion, bass, electric guitar, etc.) This will run from 10AM – 12PM.
Guitar Clinic – For kids 10 and up (or younger with teacher reference). A 3 hour camp that focuses on multiple aspects of guitar playing, with fun and games to mix it up. Take your playing to the next level over the summer with guidance from an experienced musician. This will run from 1PM – 4PM.
Songwriter’s Course – For any age, a course designed around learning to write chord progressions, melodies, lyrics and rhythms and weave them together into the fabric of a song. Also included would be a stab at recording the songs. This will run from 1PM – 4PM.
These will all be led by our very own Adam Schilt. He is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who has been with Sound of Music since 2008. He plays and teaches Guitar, Bass, Ukulele and Hand-drums. He learned to play music through independent study and a lot of jamming and collaborating with friends. Adam is a firm believer that playing with others and having fun with music, when reinforced with a little theory, is the best way to get very good very quickly. His motto is, “the best way to get great at playing is to love playing," and he does his best to inspire that love in his individually crafted lessons. Hello Everyone, Rebecca Larkin with Hearts to Haiti was in the store when she was in town in October. She runs an orphanage and they lost all of their band instruments in the earthquake. Here is a newspaper article from the summer and here is her blog with many links to interviews she gave when she was home in the summer and some updates for what has happened since. As all musicians know music can greatly aid in healing, So if you have any instruments you want to donate to this cause please contact us, we will be holding them for Rebecca until she returns to Canada around Christmas. Worship Workshop September 11, 2010 - September 26, 2010 Happy September Everybody! Sam Glasgow will be hosting PLAYING for WORSHIP Thursday evenings in 10 week units. Beginners will be booked from 6-7 PM and more advanced players from 7-8 PM. Because of Sam's awesome talent this workshop is open to everyone with a fretted instrument, be it Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Mandolin etc. This is a new program held at the Academy here in one of our larger practice rooms, so just contact us with your questions and we will tell you more! The Session will start when enrollment is high enough (minimum 3 participants maximum 10) and the cost for all 10 hours (1 hour a week x 10 weeks) is only $150. We have been committed to helping our communities make music by participating in the Search for Talent contest of the 60's, hosting How to Play lessons in regional shopping centers like Seven Oaks in the 70's & 80's and running 6 seasons of cable broadcasting on how to play and use keyboard technologies in the late 80's! In the 90's we also opened the first group studio lesson program designed to make playing keyboard fun and financially accessible to the folks of Abbotsford. The staff at the Coast Hotel were so impressed with our musical ability that they wished we could have performed longer. May 8, 2010 - May 16, 2010 We have figured out what we will be doing for our Summer Camp’s this year. Adam Schilt will be leading them all and they will be the weeks of July 12-16 and August 16-20. Demand will determine which camps happen which week so if any of them interest you give us a call to sign up today! The cost of the camp will be $75 for the two hour morning camp and $99 for the three hour afternoon camps this fee includes all materials. Music Monday May 1, 2010 - May 9, 2010 It is Music Monday this week! A Canadian initiative that has been adopted across the world to "… fill the skies with music at the same time across the country" I am sure you know a child who is participating with their school so please ask them about it to encourage their musical exploration. We are in full string registering students left right and center for fall lessons. I thought I would share a few interesting facts with you from NAMM’s Wanna Play campaign. The Benefits of Music Making: Whether you're 5 or 95, you can benefit mentally, physically and socially from playing a musical instrument. Everyone knows that playing musical instrument is fun and entertaining. But did you also know that playing music is scientifically proven to benefit people of all ages. Children and Teens -- Playing music positively affects the development of children's cognitive skills. It builds confidence, self-discipline and inspires creativity. Also playing music can increase productivity and help kids and teens connect socially with their peers .Adults and Seniors -- Playing exercises the brain and helps fight memory loss. A study following 130 people over two 10-week periods measured participants' levels of HgH. And for a laugh... ~~~ Roland has recalled 20,000 pianos due to a problem with the pedal sticking, causing pianists to play faster than they normally would, resulting in a dangerous number of accidentals. The sticky pedal also makes it harder for pianists to come to a full stop at the end of a piece making it extremely risky for audiences. Although there have been a tremendous number of accidentals, fortunately it has so far caused no deafs. Analysts are wondering if it will put a damper on their bass [base] market and if they will be able to sustain sales. Parliament is also considering calling in the Chairman of Roland Music Canada for questioning as to when the company first learned about the treble. ~~~ Register for Fall now!!! UFV SUS Battle of the Bands / Lessons Resume March 13, 2010 - March 21, 2010 We are excited to be involved in UFV’s Battle of the Bands again this year. The prize we have contributed to the awesome package is the Hagstrom Nitro package!! The very same one that was given away by Hagstrom and Nitro in January. The guitar is an Ultra Swede and the board is designed to go fast (as you can tell I don’t snowboard). Back from NAMM January 18, 2010 - January 24, 2010 We are all back from NAMM in one piece, I must say I prefer the sunshine of California to the grey skies of home, but it is awful nice to be back. Down at the show we saw lots of new product, including a new EV speaker, a new line of EV microphones, a new line of acoustic Hagstrom guitars and the 2010 LTD Takamine. The highlight of the trip for me though was seeing the key note speaker at the opening remarks… QUINCY JONES!!!!! It is so very inspiring to see someone who has spent so much of the past century in this industry and is still embracing technology. This week our music students received their performance times for our Winter Concert which is being held Friday December 18th and Saturday December 19th at the Abbotsford Senior Drop in Center. Hope your holiday shopping is going well. Our print music area is filled for your Christmas needs, be it an awesome repertoire book for your kids stocking or an easy book of Christmas Standards to have a sing/play-along we’ve got you covered. Also if ever you are looking for a specific song or book we are the place to ask, books we can order in with no problem and individual songs more often than not are available through us to be Digitally Downloaded. This is a relatively new service we are able to provide, we have a contract with the publishing companies by which we can access their online offerings through the store here and download and print copy righted music instantaneously. The cost is the same as if you order in the piece of music but without the wait time. Another cool feature of this service is that when we download the piece we have the availability to transpose it as well; this is particularly useful for students who are more comfortable playing in the “easy” keys and vocalists as it allows them to instantly move any song into their vocal range. So if ever you need a specific piece just stop by the store and we will be more than happy to help you. November 23, 2009 - November 29, 2009 Congratulations to Daniel Tan and John Kim, two of Carlos’ students who gave spectacular performances at the Tree Lighting here in the Old Downtown Abbotsford on Friday night. Their rendition of Do You Hear What I Hear and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, respectively, got the crowd into the Holiday spirit in spite of the weather. Also, congrats to local high school band Oh No! Yoko they have been selected as part of the top 3 finalists for CBC radios RockOTC contest. The band is comprised of Everett Morris, Liam Hamilton and Nic Denis all of whom attend W.J. Mouat Secondary School. This is their MySpace.
